#17 Cool down
Another healthy tip for the new year. With cold weather on us, our heating bills can be a challenge. We're often advised to turn our thermostats down a degree or two, saving on energy and cost. The average household can save as much as £130 for each degree the thermostat is turned down. Reducing our costs, and reducing our carbon impact.
It also helps us stay healthy. Recent research has shown that cooler temperatures can help us live longer and healthier. Cooler temperatures help boost our immune systems, improve metabolism and can reduce risk of illness.
Cool down to boost your mood
Cooler temperatures help our sleep, and can even boost our mood by boosting serotonin.
How cold is cold?
Everyone is different so it's something to decide for yourself. The BBC's Michael Mosley has been keeping his household thermostat at 15C—which for many is possible to adapt to and live in. His podcast on cold living makes interesting listening.
If you want to try, do adjust gradually over a number of days—your body will take time to adapt—cooler temperatures may give you many benefits if you try it out carefully. And do check with a doctor if you have any health concerns.
Cool wisely
We're here to give you inspiration about how to have a healthier and more prosperous future. If you have any health conditions or concerns, or live with younger and older people, do check with a doctor before going cold.
It's a long journey
The more we act, the more we share, the more we have a movement towards a healthier, safer, more prosperous future for us all.
